The Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) is an international organization serving the interests and needs of its individual and institutional members and supporting experiential interpretations of history.

ALHFAM is incorporated in the State of Maryland as a non-profit tax-exempt (501[c][3])
organization, and is governed by a member-elected Board in accordance with member-approved bylaws.

ALHFAM draws its membership from a broad spectrum of individuals and organizations involved in the collection, preservation or interpretation of material culture, traditional skills and historical processes. Members include volunteers, reenactors, institutional staff and vendors of goods or services. ALHFAM’s original focus on farming and agriculture has expanded to embrace disciplines from architecture to zymurgy and many in between. ALHFAM maintains, and seeks to expand relationships with other museum, historical and interpretive organizations with related interests.

Services provided to members include publications, conferences, specialized instructional programs, electronic media, including a website and listserv, and support for regional affiliates. ALHFAM services assist members in fulfilling their professional responsibilities and improving the quality of their public offerings.

We draw strength from our diverse network of members, sharing experience, research and passion for participatory learning.

 

 





Yankee Magazine partner New England Inns & Resorts has named ALHFAM member institutions Plimoth Plantation, Old Sturbridge Village and Mystic Seaport the "Best Living History Museums in New England". And it looks like ALHFAM member Rebecca Gross in the cover photo.


An article in the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily about the illumination of historic buildings notes that Gen. George Washington, AKA our own ALHFAMer Ron Carnegie, will lead the ceremony of the first night lighting of four of their most iconic structures.


ALHFAMer Deb Freidman appears in the on-line magazine EaterIn their story "What is Marlborugh Pie?"  they reference her earlier interview that was included in John T. Edge's book Apple Pie.

Holland, Michigan’s resident miller, author and our own ALHFAM board memebr, Alisa Crawford received a state history award from the Historical Society of Michigan on Friday September 25 for her book De Zwaan: The True Story of America’s Authentic Dutch Windmill.


ALHFAMer Paul E. Parish (By My Hands Enterprises) was included in the prestigious 30th Directory of Traditional American Crafts in the August 2015 issue of "Early American Life." Artists selected for the Directory have been adjudicated by museum and historical specialists across the United States, as designated as masters in their class. Paul donated a wonderful tape loom in this years auction, and it fetch a very good price.


ALHFAM's Annual Meeting pre-conference two-day Farmer's Boot Camp was featured on the Colonial Williamsburg Blog - Making History, June 24, 2015. Read all about it. And be sure to look through the great slideshow filled with ALHFAMers.


ALHFAMer Elieen Hook (Talbott & Co. Heritage Goods) has been included in the prestigious 30th Directory of Traditional American Crafts in the August 2015 issue of "Early American Life." Artists selected for the Directory have been adjudicated by museum and historical specialists across the United States, as designated as masters in their class.


For the third year in a row, ALHFAM member Lauren Muney of "Silhouettes By Hand” has also been selected by Early American Life magazine for their Directory of Traditional Artists.  One of Lauren’s freehand-scissored silhouette portraits will be featured in the summer edition of the magazine, due on newsstands in June, 2015.


ALHFAM institutional member Mystic Seaport was featured in a story in the New York Times on MAY 12, 2015, titled New Exhibition Hall for Seaport in Mystic, Conn., Has Nautical Inspiration.  ALHFAM is referenced in the article in a quote from ALHFAM Vice-President, Tom Kelleher, of institutional member Old Sturbrdge Village.
